California prosecutors revolt as Newsom moves to clear death row — including child killers

FACTS

Current and former California prosecutors are blasting Gov. Gavin Newsom's push to commute the state's death-row sentences to life without parole, including for killers whose cases shocked the state.

Among those expected to benefit is Isauro Aguirre, convicted in 2017 of torturing and murdering his girlfriend's 8-year-old son, Gabriel Fernandez. Deputy Los Angeles District Attorney Jonathan Hatami, who prosecuted the case, told Fox News Digital the governor's decision came without discussions with Gabriel's family. "It's horrible," Hatami said, and he reposted his closing argument from before Aguirre's sentencing.

Newsom's clemency plan would clear hundreds of death sentences after California voters twice kept the death penalty on the books. Prosecutors and victims' families say blanket commutations erase jury verdicts and override the will of voters — including for cases involving murdered children and police officers.
