Canada's Carney: Russian and Belarusian players won't be let in for World Juniors, despite CAS ruling

FACTS

Canada will not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Alberta, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday, despite a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling ordering the IIHF to reinstate Russia.

"Russia and Belarus are supporting this illegal and unjustified horrific war in Ukraine, as long as that's going on, there will be none of those athletes competing in Canada," Carney said. "If you're asking specifically about the World Juniors, the Russians won't be there."

The tournament runs Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer. AP reported six countries had threatened to boycott if Russia took part.
