Beijing has confirmed for the first time that it is discussing a three-way meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters that China "is in communication with relevant parties regarding a meeting between the three heads of state." Nothing is set, but the gathering would come this month on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders summit in Shenzhen, which China is hosting.
Trump is expected to travel to Shenzhen to meet Xi for the third time this year, as a fragile U.S.-China trade truce runs toward a January expiration. On Friday, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer pressed Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on a video call to take "concrete actions" on agricultural purchases, rare earths and critical minerals. Trump has said he would be interested in meeting Xi and Putin to talk nuclear arms control.
