Sheriff names the hero: Marine vet John Fraley shot gunman Jacob Pearson five times, ending Citibank campus attack over a $2,500 debt

FACTS

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister on Thursday identified the Citibank security officer who stopped Wednesday's attack at the company's Brandon, Florida, campus as John Fraley, a Marine Corps veteran and Citibank vice president of operations, and said he saved lives by confronting the gunman instead of running.

"He didn't have to stop. He could have run and protected his own life, too. He took up a tactical position when he saw the suspect coming and made a decision," Chronister said, according to Bay News 9. "Because of the heroic actions of this Citibank security officer ... his reign of terror ended before it even began."

The sheriff identified the gunman as Jacob Pearson, 35, of Orlando. Chronister said Pearson had called a law office contracted by Citibank for collections that morning, angry over a summons on a $2,500 debt, and referred to his AR-15. Shortly after noon he crashed through a courtyard gate, shot and killed a 41-year-old Citibank employee, then walked into the cafeteria carrying 90 rounds of ammunition. Fraley, who had taken a tactical position at a men's restroom, exchanged fire with him and struck him five times. Pearson died at Tampa General Hospital.

About 3,200 employees were on the campus. Four people had non-life-threatening injuries, some likely while fleeing, the sheriff said. CCTV footage circulating Thursday shows the confrontation.
