Several Democrats who campaigned on "affordability" pivoted within hours of winning the House to talk of investigations and subpoenas aimed at the Trump administration — including immigration enforcement — and went quiet when Fox News Digital asked why the message flipped so fast.
Rep. Robert Garcia of California, poised to lead House Oversight, answered the midterm win with a "Lawyer Up" statement even after telling CNN before Election Day that Democratic priorities would be lowering the cost of "gas, groceries, the mortgage, the rent," alongside government accountability. When pressed after the election, a Garcia spokesperson pointed to a post saying Democrats would "have a lot of work to do" on costs and oversight.
Fox reports other prominent Democrats who ran on household costs similarly declined to explain the sudden emphasis on probes of Trump agencies. Progressive organizers have circulated investigation wish lists targeting the administration and corporate allies, while some Democratic leaders publicly insist they will not simply "get even."
