Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says the Iran war has been "a big, big drag" on Republicans this year, and that Republicans who blame Joe Biden for gas prices are losing voters' trust.
"We just got to be honest. Gas is higher. It hurts people, working-class people, and it's higher because of this conflict. That's just a fact," DeSantis told Stephen A. Smith on SiriusXM Monday night. "If you can't admit that to voters, then you're gaslighting them, and they're not going to listen to you on other things."
He said some Republican voters have "checked out" because Trump "ran saying he wasn't going to do a Middle East war, where he did," and that the war wouldn't be an issue if it had been "wrapped up in like a week, like Venezuela was." If it drags on for the rest of Trump's term, he said, "it's going to be devastating to his ability to get anything done." Gas averaged about $4.11 a gallon on Tuesday, a record for an Election Day, The Hill reports.
DeSantis leaves office in January because of term limits. He said if Republicans lose Tuesday, they should change course on AI, data centers and Big Tech: "When we get into corporatism, that's when you really start to lose people."
