DSA takes a Manhattan victory lap: "We're calling the shots" — and ICE is not wanted here

FACTS

The Democratic Socialists of America marked Tuesday's blue wave with a Saturday victory march through Manhattan, claiming credit for the midterm sweep and demanding new leadership in the House and Senate if traditional Democrats will not back their causes, the New York Post reported.

Connie Cooper of Connecticut was among the hundreds who marched about a mile from Times Square to Seventh Avenue and 14th Street. "We don't want corporate Dems in there," she said. "We're calling the shots." Cooper, who carried a sign reading "New Majority Leader," added: "It's not enough to just keep the status quo. That's not what people want."

DSA leaders have made no secret that they view incoming presumptive House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and incoming presumptive Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as too centrist. Marchers also demanded that the incoming Democratic leadership keep Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers out of New York City, chanting, "Jeffries, Schumer let's be clear ICE is not wanted here."

The rally, billed as "March for Our Democracy: The Fight Isn't Over," was sponsored by far-left groups including the NYC DSA chapter and Make the Road New York, as well as city unions including the United Federation of Teachers and the Professional Staff Congress-CUNY, according to a rally flyer cited by the Post. Incoming New York Rep. Darializa Avila Chevalier, a DSA member, is among the new far-left lawmakers heading to Congress.
