Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed said on CBS's "60 Minutes" Sunday that Palestine has a right to exist, but added a condition when asked the same about Israel.
Asked by Ross Douthat whether Israel has a right to exist, El-Sayed first replied, "I don't ever get the question of, 'does Palestine have a right to exist?'" He then answered "yes" on Palestine. On Israel, he said: "Yes — if there is a shared understanding," adding that he supports two states "if the Palestinian people decide, and the Israeli people decide," or "one state shared in a different way," Jewish Insider reports.
In the interview, El-Sayed also said Israel committed genocide in Gaza and that U.S. support for a two-state solution is "incoherent" while it arms Israel. He said he'd stand up for Jewish Americans despite disagreements over Israel. The interview aired the same day Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, citing El-Sayed's handling of Israel and antisemitism.
