Tuesday's elections put two more Democratic Socialists of America members in big-city mayor's offices — and now four of the 20 largest U.S. cities will have socialist mayors, Fox News reports.
Los Angeles Councilwoman Nithya Raman, a DSA member, defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and will take office in December over roughly 4 million city residents. In Washington, D.C., DSA member Janeese Lewis George won the mayor's race in a city of about 700,000. They join Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Together the four cities house about 14 million people inside city limits — and roughly 44 million across their metro areas who could feel the spillover on crime, housing and business. Voters also sent at least seven DSA-backed or affiliated candidates to the House. A recent Fox News poll found 32% of voters view socialism favorably — matching a five-year high — while 64% view it unfavorably.
