Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan has asked the U.S. Marshals Service for protection after receiving death threats for endorsing Republican Mike Rogers in the state's Senate race, two senior Trump administration officials told Axios on Tuesday.
"She has received death threats and reached out to the Marshals Service," one of the officials said. "There's a process to go through but she's a member of Congress and we expect her request will be fulfilled."
Stevens lost the August Democratic primary to Abdul El-Sayed. She endorsed him, then switched to Rogers on Sunday after appearing with him at a Detroit church service. She said El-Sayed had told her to stay away from his campaign. The split was over Israel, and over an ad by a PAC tied to Cenk Uygur that blamed Israel for rising grocery prices. Stevens wanted El-Sayed to condemn it, not just disavow it.
Since Sunday, more than half of her congressional staff has resigned, Michigan's Democratic Party chair said she is no longer a member of the party, and Chuck Schumer called the endorsement "a despicable betrayal." Stevens hasn't commented on the threats.
