REPORT
Hebron Governor Khaled Dudin said Monday that Israeli forces had withdrawn from the entire West Bank city and that Palestinian Authority security forces were in control, Anadolu reports. The IDF launched the operation Oct. 23, after two Palestinian gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded three near the city. Israeli forces later killed both attackers. The IDF said the operation targeted terrorism. It has not publicly commented on the withdrawal.
Palestinian officials say more than 3,300 people were displaced or affected and 15 homes and other structures were demolished. Those figures have not been independently verified.
The same event in two languages: Al Jazeera English's breaking post called it a withdrawal "following an Israeli siege in the occupied West Bank," and its follow-ups called it "a 10-day Israeli military operation." Al Jazeera Arabic called the troops "occupation forces" (قوات الاحتلال) in every post, quoted Hebron's mayor saying the siege lasted 11 days, and ran video of crowds of families returning home. None of the posts we read from either channel mentioned the attack that killed the two soldiers.
Update, Nov. 2: The IDF has now confirmed it completed its raid in Hebron and withdrew from the neighborhood where the two gunmen lived, The Times of Israel's Emanuel Fabian and The Jerusalem Post report.
