Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen fired a ballistic missile toward the Medina region of Saudi Arabia on Thursday, and air defenses intercepted and destroyed it, the Saudi-led coalition said.
Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Malki announced the interception in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency. No damage or injuries were reported. Medina is home to the Prophet's Mosque, one of Islam's two holiest sites.
The launch comes as fighting in Yemen's civil war has intensified in recent months. On the same day, Yemen's foreign minister warned in Berlin that the Houthis are running a cross-border campaign that threatens international shipping, while Iran's Foreign Ministry again denied that Iranian military experts are operating in Yemen.
