IN-05 is one of the House swing races The Filtered News is tracking tonight. With 28.6% of the expected vote counted, it is too early to call. Live count: https://thefilterednews.com/elections#race-house-IN-05
The first big batch of votes in Indiana's 5th District, a seat Republican Victoria Spartz won by 18.5 points in 2024, has Democrat J.D. Ford ahead 49,541 to 28,390, or 63.6% to 36.4%, with 28.6% of the expected vote counted (AP via NYT, 6:32 p.m. ET).
Most of that batch is early votes from Hamilton County, the Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville suburbs north of Indianapolis that make up roughly half the district's vote. Early votes lean Democratic almost everywhere this year, and the Election Day vote, plus Madison, Delaware, Grant, Howard and Tipton counties, is still to come.
Hamilton County is the whole ballgame here. It has moved about 28 points toward Democrats since 2012, and early turnout there was almost double its 2022 pace a week before the election. A local political scientist told WTHR last week that if Ford doesn't win Hamilton, "he cannot win this district." The last public poll, from Quantus Insights, had Spartz up 45 to 41.8.
No outlet has called the race.
