Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says it has scrapped a long-standing, self-proclaimed 2,000-kilometer (about 1,200-mile) ceiling on the range of its ballistic missiles, the Associated Press and Iranian state outlets reported Saturday.
IRGC spokesman Brig. Gen. Hossein Mohebbi, asked whether Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei's order for an immediate response to any threat "without geographical restrictions" meant the old range limit was gone, answered: "This restriction has been lifted for us." He added that Iran must show the capability on the battlefield rather than boast about it: "Our duty is to show our capabilities on the battlefield."
The comments came days after Khamenei told military commanders any threat must be met with an impactful response without geographic limits, and amid U.S. limited strikes on Iranian air defenses and continuing Qatari-mediated talks. Mohebbi did not announce a new maximum range or a specific new missile.
