Israel's first ambassador to Somaliland presents his credentials; cornerstone laid for an embassy in Hargeisa

FACTS

Michael Lotem, Israel's first ambassador to Somaliland, presented his credentials to Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa, the Jerusalem Post reported. A cornerstone-laying ceremony for Israel's new embassy in the city followed.

"Israel is determined to develop and strengthen its relations with Somaliland," Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said. Lotem was appointed in April and will first serve as a non-resident ambassador.

Israel and Somaliland established official relations in December 2025. Sa'ar visited Somaliland in January, and in February Somaliland named Dr. Mohamed Haji as its first ambassador to Israel.
