At least 34 people, including 30 children, were injured Thursday after inhaling cleaning chemical fumes at a school in Jerusalem, the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority announced, The Jerusalem Post reports.
Magen David Adom said injured students and staff were treated at the scene and taken to Shaare Zedek and Hadassah Medical Centers. Hadassah said it was treating 17 children and four staff members, all in light condition except for two children in moderate condition.
United Hatzalah said the incident likely happened after cleaning chemicals were mixed, including chlorine and acid. The fire authority incident commander said police were told to keep the school closed until Friday for more environmental testing, that firefighters had not detected hazardous levels so far, and that the incident was under control.
