Speaker Johnson won't run for House GOP leader; Scalise and Jordan vie for the job

FACTS

House Speaker Mike Johnson told staff on a Wednesday morning call that he will not run for minority leader in the new Congress, Axios reports.

Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan are both running to replace him. Scalise's camp called him "a proven and tested leader who is ready on day one." Jordan wrote to colleagues: "I am battle-tested on the oversight front and I know the Democrats' playbook."

House Republicans are scheduled to elect their next leadership team on Nov. 10, with candidates facing a Friday deadline to declare, according to Axios.
