Job openings jump to 7.5 million in September, the strongest sign yet that hiring is picking up

FACTS

U.S. employers posted 7.52 million job openings at the end of September, up 333,000 from August, the Labor Department said Tuesday in its JOLTS report. The openings rate rose to 4.5%. Hires came to 5.40 million, layoffs to 1.64 million and quits to 3.37 million, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. CNBC called it a big gain and a positive sign for the labor market ahead of the next payrolls report, and AP reported the same figures.
