Los Angeles Mayor-elect Nithya Raman joined anti-ICE protesters Saturday outside Adventist Health White Memorial Medical Center in Boyle Heights, leading chants of "ICE out of Boyle Heights" and "ICE out of LA," the New York Post reported.
"I am an immigrant myself," Raman told the crowd. "I have felt the fear that so many across this city, across this country have felt since these raids began."
The protest followed a Friday-night confrontation after ICE agents brought a person in their custody to the hospital's emergency department for undisclosed medical reasons. Hospital officials said agents stood across the ambulance entrance for about two hours, and ambulances were rerouted. Outgoing Mayor Karen Bass called on the Trump administration "to stop all immigration enforcement in and around health care facilities." The LAPD responded to the protests but said its officers did not take part in immigration enforcement.
Raman, a DSA-backed candidate who defeated Bass in this week's mayoral election, has pledged to replace LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, whom she has criticized over the department's response to ICE operations. Her 100-day public safety plan calls for expanding unarmed crisis-response teams and auditing police compliance with the city's sanctuary law.
