Lakewood, Colorado: one police officer killed, three wounded after suspect opens fire on RTD bus

FACTS

One Lakewood, Colorado, police officer was killed and three others were wounded Thursday evening after a suspect opened fire when officers approached him as he tried to board a Regional Transportation District bus, police said.

Officers were called about 6:30 p.m. local time to the area of Colfax and Wadsworth — about five miles west of downtown Denver — on a report of a suspicious person who may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier in the day, Lakewood Police Department public information officer John Romero told reporters. Within seconds of agents approaching the suspect on an RTD Route 76 bus, the suspect opened fire and a gunfight ensued, Romero said. The suspect was killed. A civilian was also injured; identities of the officers and the suspect have not been released.

All four officers were taken to hospitals; one died. The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating. Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said he was heartbroken that a Lakewood Police agent was killed in the line of duty. RTD said it was deeply concerned by the shooting aboard a contracted Route 76 bus and that the safety of customers, employees and partners remains its highest priority.
