Latvia warns of an airspace threat near Russia's border; NATO jets scrambled, object falls in Balvi

FACTS

Latvia's armed forces told residents of two eastern regions, Balvi and Ludza, to shelter indoors Monday night after an unidentified object entered from the direction of Russia, and said NATO air-policing fighters had been activated, Reuters reports. The alert ended after about 25 minutes, and the military said the object was believed to have come down in the Balvi area near the Russian border; ground searches continued, Delfi and BB.LV report.

Ukrainian long-range drones aimed at Russian Baltic ports have repeatedly strayed into Finland and the Baltic states; Kyiv blames Russian jamming. The object's origin has not been confirmed.
