Unlike the rest of New York City and much of the country, Staten Island Republicans survived Tuesday's Democratic wave, the New York Post reported.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis won a fourth term representing Staten Island and a sliver of Brooklyn even after the Staten Island Advance endorsed Democrat Mike Decillis over her support for President Trump. "Voters are angry," Malliotakis told the Post. "We don't like the one-party rule in the city and state, and we know who is to blame for the quality-of-life issues we're facing, and that's why we take it out on the Democrats."
She pointed to congestion pricing and tolls, soft-on-crime policies and higher property taxes than other boroughs. Staten Island Republicans also held three state Assembly seats and two Senate seats and picked up a state judgeship, while nearby southern Brooklyn lost four state legislative seats. Island voters also rejected citywide winners including Gov. Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James, and they voted down five ballot questions pushed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration that passed citywide.
