CDC: U.S. measles cases surpass 5,000 — confirmed in 45 states, eight dead

FACTS

Measles cases in the United States have surpassed 5,000 this year, according to newly updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data reported Friday.

At least 5,182 cases have been confirmed across 45 states and Washington, D.C., with 18 among international visitors. Eight measles-associated deaths have been confirmed in 2026: six in Pennsylvania, one in New York and one in Wisconsin. Three of those deaths were confirmed by state health officials this week, including New York's first measles death in more than 30 years and Wisconsin's first since 1990.

About 96% of cases are among people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown. At least 11% of cases have resulted in hospitalization. Kindergarten MMR coverage for the 2025-26 school year was 92.4%, down from 95.2% before the COVID-19 pandemic.
