First Lady Melania Trump hosted officials from Russia and Ukraine at the White House on Thursday after what her office called a historic ceasefire she helped secure in Oleshky, a contested area in southern Ukraine.
In remarks shared by the White House Rapid Response account, Melania said the temporary ceasefire let food, clean water and medicine into the area and allowed nearly 800 people to leave their homes in search of safety and loved ones. "The lives of innocent people must transcend the division of war," she said, urging both sides to build on the pause.
Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin, publicly thanked Melania for the humanitarian role and presented a painting from an 11-year-old girl from Oleshky. A senior Ukrainian lawmaker asked her to continue de-escalation efforts. Melania's office framed the White House meeting as a step from a temporary ceasefire toward a more lasting peace.
