First Lady Melania Trump announced Saturday in Baton Rouge that Louisiana State University is launching a $7.2 million permanent endowment for Fostering the Future scholarships, for LSU students who grew up in foster care.
"At some point in a young person's life, the world can feel like it's moving too fast," she said. "For children navigating foster care, that feeling of drifting can feel even stronger." She said the fund "will give young people from foster care an anchor of stability, a strong educational foundation, and a chance to build a wonderful life."
The endowment is anchored by a $5 million commitment from Baton Rouge contractor MMR Group, with more from LSU Foundation donors. Mrs. Trump said 14 Fostering the Future scholars are at LSU and nine at Alabama, and 26 universities nationwide now support 100 scholars. LSU players wear Be Best Fostering the Future patches for Saturday night's game against Alabama.
