FACTS
Republicans hold the Senate 53-47, so Democrats need a net gain of four seats for a majority, Reuters reports. Thirty-five seats are on the ballot, including special elections in Ohio and Florida.
NPR flags three Republican-held seats that have become competitive: Texas (Ken Paxton vs. James Talarico), Kansas (Sen. Roger Marshall vs. Adam Hamilton) and Iowa (Rep. Ashley Hinson vs. Josh Turek). Michigan (Mike Rogers vs. Abdul El-Sayed) and Alaska (Sen. Dan Sullivan vs. Mary Peltola) are also among the most closely watched.
The first polls close at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday. NPR expects the House picture to become clear sooner than the Senate, where counting could take days and two states use ranked-choice voting.
