FACTS
Óscar Puente resigned as Spain's transport minister on Tuesday over the high-speed train crash at Urda, in Toledo province, that killed 69 people. He announced it at the end of his testimony on the crash before the standing committee of the Congress.
"A transport minister can't stay in office with two serious accidents in less than a year," Puente said. The first was the Adamuz crash in Córdoba on Jan. 18.
Puente also gave up his spot at the top of the Socialist list for Valladolid in the Nov. 29 general election, which was published in the official gazette the same day. The party now has to rebuild that list less than four weeks before the vote.
