NYC teacher's aide charged with murder in stabbing of Brooklyn jogger Katie Suarez

FACTS

A New York City public school paraprofessional was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree murder in the Oct. 30 stabbing death of Katie Suarez, the 28-year-old who was attacked while jogging on the Shore Parkway Greenway in Bath Beach, Brooklyn, police sources told the New York Post.

The suspect, Sayed Mohassib, 27, worked as a teacher's aide at PS 200 The Benson School in Bath Beach. According to the Post, he was discharged from the Marines in 2022 as psychologically unfit and had earlier served about six weeks in the NYPD. He told investigators he woke up covered in blood and had no memory of the killing, the Post reported.

The Department of Education said Mohassib has been suspended and that support is being provided to the school community. Education insiders told the Post the arrest shows the city's vetting of school staff is broken.
