President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a proclamation under the Antiquities Act establishing the Oval Office National Monument, covering the Oval Office (Room 110), the Outer Oval Office (Rooms 106 and 108), and the Cabinet Room (Room 105).
The proclamation directs the Interior Secretary, through the National Park Service, to develop a management plan that prioritizes preserving the rooms' structural and architectural features and to require documentation and review before any action that would substantially alter or demolish them. It expressly does not restrict a president's authority to redecorate, select furnishings, or make ordinary operational and security changes that do not substantially impair the historic structure.
The White House and its grounds were already a National Historic Landmark. Future presidents can still reverse a monument proclamation, as Trump himself has done with prior designations. The move was among Trump's first formal post-midterm actions.
