An Orthodox Jewish man was attacked Saturday morning while walking to synagogue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the NYPD is investigating the assault as a possible hate crime, Ynet reported.
The attack happened around 8:40 a.m. near Heyward Street and Bedford Avenue. Surveillance video, first posted by the local outlet Williamsburg News (@WMSBG), shows a man crossing the street and spilling an unknown substance on the Jewish man. The victim defends himself, and the two men end up wrestling in the roadway before several other men run over and separate them.
Volunteers from Williamsburg Shomrim, the Jewish community patrol, and officers from the NYPD's 90th Precinct detained the suspect. Hatzalah volunteers treated the victim. His condition was not officially released; local reports said his injuries appeared minor.
Police have not released the suspect's name or said what led to the attack.
